It’s the cold and flu season again. Each year, many people develop the flu or exhibit flu like symptoms, and most recover after a week or so. However, a small percentage develops complications, including Pneumonia, and a very small percent die. What can you do to stay well, or minimize your risks during this time of the year?
First, it always makes sense to be immunized against any flu. The risks of the immunization are so small, compared to the complications of flu, that you should not question taking this simple preventive action. Anyone over 65 should also be immunized against Pneumonia. After taking these basic precautions, you can focus on lifestyle decisions that will assist you in staying well through this infection ridden season.
Basic hygiene including washing hands regularly, coughing into your sleeve, not your hands, and avoiding touching your mouth, nose and eyes, will protect you from a large percentage of viruses you are exposed to. This time of the year you need to be vigilant in practicing these behaviors every day.
Finally, your healthy lifestyle will be your final line of defense to minimize your risk of illness. If you eat a balanced diet, take your prescribed medicines and vitamins, continue to get your daily exercise, and spend time with your friends and family, you will keep your immune system working at its best. So, when you are exposed to viruses that cause colds and flu, you will be able to mount a rapid, aggressive response to these unwelcome winter visitors.
Some of you will no doubt still become infected, and exhibit symptoms of a cold or flu. Your best chance for a speedy recovery includes appropriate medical care, and having your body working at its best to defeat these invading viruses and bacteria. (For more flu-related information, please contact your health care provider.) So, enjoy the season with its many wonderful traditions, taking the necessary precautions and living a successful aging lifestyle as your best insurance for a healthy winter season.
