This Week in Congress: Sanctioning Turkey for Invading Syria & Calling for Recognition of the Armenian Genocide
How do you feel about this week's congressional agenda? What else should Congress vote on?
Amid ongoing tension in the U.S.-Turkey relationship over the latter’s invasion of Northern Syria, the House is set to take up a bill to sanction Turkish officials involved with the incursion and reported human rights abuses, in addition to a bill calling for official federal recognition of the Armenian genocide.
The House starts its week Monday with votes expected on 14 bills, including legislation that aims to improve flight hazard notices for pilots, prevent kids from buying vaping products online, and reauthorize programs supporting older Americans. Later in the week, the House will take up bills to impose sanctions on Turkey and recognize the Armenian genocide. It’s also expected to take up bills to prohibit mining and energy development near protected federal lands in Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico.
The Senate will convene Monday for a series of votes on amendments to a FY2020 funding package that includes a variety of domestic agencies, such as the FBI, NASA, TSA, and the USDA. A passage vote on that bill could occur later in the week, but the rest of the Senate’s agenda is yet to be announced.
