Florida Wants Year-Round Daylight Saving Time — Do You?
Join us and tell your reps how you feel!
What’s the story?
On the 100th Anniversary of Congress’ first daylight saving time legislation, lawmakers in Florida passed the Sunshine Protection Act.
If Congress approves the measure, the Sunshine State will spring forward and never fall back.
Hawaii and most of Arizona are also on standard time year-round.
DST runs from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.
Who created DST?
The idea of daylight saving, like everything in America, was first conceived by Benjamin Franklin.
Read all about DST at Countable’s Fact Tuesday: Daylight Saving Time.
Who controls the time?
"Under federal law, the U.S. Department of Transportation is charged with setting time zones but allows states to exempt themselves from daylight saving time, if Congress approves," the Miami Herald explained.
Congress would have to exempt Florida from the Uniform Time Act of 1966.
What do you think?
Are Florida, Hawaii, and Arizona on to something? Should the U.S. no longer follow daylight saving time? Should DST be adopted year-round? Do you enjoy the sun setting at noon in winter? Why do I always add an "s" and say daylight savings time? Hit Take Action and tell your reps, then use your extra hour to comment below.
