Late Wednesday night, President Trump issued new guidance rescinding Obama-era protections of transgender students in public schools. The move signals a major shift in federal policy regarding people whose gender does not match historical norms.
Under the previous rule, institutions that receive federal funding -- including virtually all public schools -- were mandated to comply with an executive branch rule allowing students to use the bathroom that complies with their gender-identity. The new guidance from the Trump Administration rescinds that rule.
