Trump Voter Fraud Commission Requested Data Identifying Texans with 'Hispanic Surnames'

What’s the story?
President Donald Trump’s controversial (and now defunct) Commission on Election Integrity requested files on every Texan with a Hispanic surname.
As the Dallas News explained, “documents filed with the Texas Secretary of State show that Ron Williams, the man in charge of collecting information from the states for the commission, checked boxes to flag Hispanic surnames on his request forms.”
Why does it matter?
The Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity asked every state, and Washington, D.C., for detailed voter registration data—but in Texas’ case, it also asked to see records identifying voters with Hispanic surnames.
A lawsuit by Texas minority and voting rights groups prevented the information from being released to the White House.
Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap (D), a former member and outspoken critic of the commission, said the request for Hispanic names raised “grave questions about exactly what the commission hoped to find and what ‘problems’ it planned on solving."
Williams was fired from the commission in October after being charged with possession of child pornography.
Trump disbanded the commission on January 3, pinning its death on states refusing to hand over election data.
