Should Election Day be a federal holiday?

What’s the story?
- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) took to the Senate floor Wednesday to rally against HR-1, the sweeping anti-corruption proposal House Democrats have put forward that includes a proposal to make Election Day a federal holiday.
- McConnell called the For the People Act the “Democratic Politician Protection Act” and said he sees it as a “power grab.”
"This is the Democrat plan to restore democracy? A brand-new week of paid vacation for every federal employee who would like to hover around while you cast your ballot? A Washington-based taxpayer-subsidized clearinghouse for political campaign funding? A power grab that’s smelling more and more like what it is.”
What are Rs and Ds saying?
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), who recently announced her presidential ambitions, tweeted the criticism many on the left have levied against McConnell:
Sen. Ted Lieu (D-CA) shared similar sentiments:
- But McConnell said the For the People Act would "victimize every American taxpayer by pouring their money into expensive new subsidies that don't even pass the laugh test."
- The Senate Majority Leader also derided how the bill would "create an additional brand new paid leave benefit for up to six days for any federal bureaucrats who decides they’d like to hang out at the polls during an election."
