Dear Steven Cain I am campaigning to reduce water pollution. I would like you to stop using plastics in your supermarket and start using biodegradable plastic. This is essential because plastic is literally killing us and if we don’t make a change there is predicted to be 1 tonne of rubbish to 3 tonne of fish by 2025. That is just 6 years from now.

Water pollution is a major problem across the world. It is known that Asia has a higher number of contaminated rivers than any other continent, but because of plastic pollution other areas of the world are catching up. Between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes of plastic enters the ocean each year. Plastics and water pollution destroy the environment, kill more than a million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals every year and eventually enter the human food chain. This is why we need to stop using single use plastic and instead use biodegradable plastic and especially big supermarkets like yours.

There are many company’s out there researching alternatives to plastics. One such company is called Plastic Planet they are based in the UK and provide supermarkets with biodegradable plastic options for produce. If Coles were to introduce this type of packaging other supermarkets may follow you and change the

Ben Gerry
