David Bernhardt, Acting Chief of Interior Department

We are outraged that you are violating your ethics pledge in your attempts to rollback protection of the Delta Smelt. Furthermore, we are incredibly concerned that your actions will cause the extinction of the unique and important Delta Smelt. While the fish is small, it is vital to the ecosystem of the San Francisco Bay Area and is crucial to preventing toxic algae blooms that would threaten the entire ecosystem. Despite the continued assaults of Big Farming, courts have continued to rule that the Delta Smelt is endangered and in dire need of protection. Yet despite these rulings, you have dedicated your career to trying to rollback their protections and confiscate the water they need to continue to survive.

Not only are your actions going to endanger this precious species, but you are also in flagrant violations of ethics rules and standards. All interior department officials are required to recuse themselves from issues affecting their former lobbyist interests for at least two years, yet despite your lobbying on behalf of farming associations, you have issued a ruling on the Delta Smelt in your first year in your position. This behavior is flagrant and dangerous and we demand your immediate recusal from this important conservation issue.

We suspect that you believe that you will get away with this corrupt action because nobody is paying attention. Well, we are watching you, and if we can help it, you will not get away with this corruption.

Signed,

Protect Endangered Species

The director of the Interior Dept, a former lobbyist for Big Farming, wants to redirect water the Delta Smelt needs to survive to Big Agricultural interests instead. Not only will this further endanger the threatened Delta Smelt and put at risk the entire Bay Area ecosystem, but it is a blatant violation of ethics rules and standards. Take a stand to protect the Delta Smelt now.
