A new report found that private detention centers are forcing detained migrants to perform physical labor for less than a dollar-a-day. Private detention centers hold more than 70% of the 48,000 detained migrants in the United States. The migrants in detention centers have not committed any crime, but have simply been detained as they await their asylum and immigration court hearings. Yet despite the fact they haven't committed a single crime, they are being conscripted into dehumanizing labor and paid at criminally low rates.

Allowing private detention centers to conscript migrants into forced labor is a human rights abuse and is inherently dehumanizing and cruel. These private detention centers are conscripting migrants for private profits, which they often use to push for stricter immigration policies and more detentions. We must stop this cruel cycle of incarceration and abuse. Let's stop by ensuring that migrants in detention center are treated with respect and paid fairly for any labor they practice.
