Greg Sheehan, Director of US Fish and Wildlife Service

The US Fish and Wildlife Service is considering a proposal to develop massive swaths of the endangered Florida Panthers' territory. We urge you to reject this proposal to build additional developments in the beleaguered Florida Panthers' habitat.

The proposal, which is misleadingly called the "habitat conservation plan", would develop 45,000 acres of the Panthers' territory. It would also allow new sand and gravel mines, which will deplete local resources and pollute the Panthers' last remaining refuge. Importantly, the proposed plan would develop along key wildlife corridors, creating dangerous obstacles for the panthers as they attempt to shift back and forth between their breeding and feeding grounds.

The Florida Panther is an endangered species, that has only recently begun to recover from the brink of extinction. In the 1980s, the population of Florida Panthers was down to about 20 cats, but after thirty years of conservation work, the population has finally rebounded to around 200 cats. However, all of this could be quickly reversed by new development projects that undermine the conservation efforts to preserve natural land on which the panthers could live. Notably, the biggest threat to the Florida Panthers' population comes from cars passing through their territory - about 25 panthers each year are killed by passing cars. This development project will further imperil the panthers by adding over 1-million vehicle trips in and around the panthers' territory. More, the plan will not only threaten the Florida Panther but will also affect over 18 other endangered species that live in the same territory.

In summary, this plan will be absolutely detrimental to Florida wildlife and to the endangered Florida Panther. We do not get second chances at preventing extinctions. We must act now before it's too late. We are asking you to reject the proposed plan to develop the Florida Panthers' territory.

Signed,

Protect Endangered Species
