Seismic blasting is an extremely dangerous and unnecessary technique that kills, injures, and harms whales, dolphins and other marine life. Seismic blasting has been known to deafen marine animals with which it comes in contact and to frequently cause whales and their calves to separate. Seismic blasting in the Atlantic will cause significant harm to the marine population in general and will specifically further endanger the threatened North Atlantic Right Whale, which is already on the brink of extinction.

But despite the well documented risks of seismic blasting, the Trump Administration recently approved the use of seismic blasting for five oil companies, who are searching for new offshore oil drilling locations. Not only will seismic blasting further damage fragile marine animal populations, but it will also serve as a precursor to dangerous and deadly offshore oil drilling projects which will only inflict more harm and damage.

We the people demand that you reverse your decision to allow seismic blasting in the Atlantic Ocean. We cannot prioritize short-term profits of oil companies over the long-term health of marine biodiversity. We are running out of time to protect the valuable and irreplaceable marine life that lives in the Atlantic. We demand you rescind the permits your administration has issued authorizing seismic blasting in the Atlantic.

Signed,
