Sign the Petition to

Maine's elected representatives at the national, state and municipal level.

Whereas, the greatest security threat faced by people in Maine and globally is climate change;
Whereas, the Pentagon has the largest carbon footprint on the planet;
Whereas, building weapons prepares for war rather than investing in non-violent resolution of conflicts;
Whereas, building expensive weapon systems impoverishes social programs including health care, education, public transportation and housing;
Therefore, we call on you, our elected officials, to redirect funds from building warships at Bath Iron Works to instead build sustainable energy solutions to address the crisis of climate change.

Signed,

Lisa Savage

How this will help

Climate crisis would be addressed by conversion of BIW's considerable industrial capacity to building public transportation and/or renewable energy infrastructure.

Climate crisis would be addressed by conversion of BIW's considerable industrial capacity to building public transportation and/or renewable energy infrastructure.

True security would be achieved by addressing the biggest threat of all to humans in the 21st century: climate chaos in the form of catastrophic storms, wildfires, and rising sea levels.

No jobs would be lost in this conversion to peaceful production, because building weapons does not create as many jobs as similar levels of investment in other sectors of the economy. See Brown University study on job loss due to military production https://watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/files/cow/imc...

Many union members at BIW have expressed their desire to build things more useful than warships and weapons systems.

Animals and other life forms that suffer from pollution created by warships would also benefit from conversion.

Future generations would benefit from building for life, not death.
