U.S. Senate

The Senate Judiciary Committee must delay the scheduled vote on Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh. The serious sexual assault allegations made by Professor Christine Blasey Ford against the nominee cannot be ignored or swept under the rug -- and Kavanaugh should be required to explain himself in public, under oath, to the American people before a vote is held.

Because of this and other concerns (including the lack of public access to Kavanaugh's full records and the ongoing investigation into President Trump's 2016 campaign), there is too much at stake to continue with this nomination process as scheduled.

The American people deserve to know the full truth about any nominee for a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court -- and the rush to confirm Brett Kavanaugh must cease until Professor Christine Blasey Ford's deeply disturbing allegations of sexual assault are addressed by the Senate Judiciary Committee and by the nominee.

Like all survivors, Professor Ford deserves to be heard and treated fairly and respectfully. The abuse she detailed must not be ignored to jam through a Supreme Court nominee.

These allegations come on top of a nomination process already clouded with uncertainty. Millions of pages of Kavanaugh's relevant records have been withheld from the American public. And allowing a President who is under investigation to appoint a Justice who may someday hear a case related to that investigation would compromise the integrity of the Supreme Court.

There is too much at stake to rush this process. Exercising the brakes is fully in keeping with the Senate Judiciary Committee's constitutional obligations.
