United States Congress

The approximately 10 million Americans who identify as LGBTQ deserve to be properly counted and represented. It's time to pass the Census Equality Act, ensuring that the 2030 Census collects information on sexual orientation and gender identity to better serve LGBTQ communities.

How this will help

We conduct a census every ten years to collect objective information about who lives in our communities -- and we rely on it so government agencies can base their decisions on real data. But right...

We conduct a census every ten years to collect objective information about who lives in our communities -- and we rely on it so government agencies can base their decisions on real data. But right now, the questions we use to count LGBTQ Americans don't paint the full picture, asking only if someone lives with a "same-sex" spouse or partner.

The Census Equality Act would add anonymous questions about sexual orientation and gender identity to the 2030 census (unfortunately it's too late for 2020). Community groups, public agencies, and LGBTQ Americans need this data to advocate for civil rights and to fight discrimination -- asking specifically about sexual orientation and gender identity will help identify and fix inequities in health and wellbeing for the LGBTQ community, particularly among transgender people. The Census Equality Act would also set strict privacy standards to prevent the release of publicly identifiable information about how people responded to these questions.
