David Littleproud, Australian Federal minister for agriculture and water resources

The live export trade is treating our animals inhumanely and many of them are dying because of it. I am calling for it to be banned because of the way that the animals are treated on board the ships and the fact that they are sent to countries where there are no laws making sure the animals are slaughtered in a humane way.

The reason why I want to ban the live export trade is because, while the animals are on board the ships they are kept in cramped conditions and in their own excrement, they are then shipped to countries where they are not protected by laws and are slaughtered inhumanely and when you compare the yearly revenue of the live export trade which is $901 million to the export of frozen meat which is $6.8 billion, if the live export trade were to be banned there would not be a large effect on the economy.

Banning the live export trade will ensure that animals no longer have to go through long painful journeys where they are forced to stand in cramped and dirty conditions and then be inhumanly slaughtered when they arrive.

Signed,

I am asking you to take action because you are the federal Agriculture minister and it is your responsibility to make sure that our farm animals are not being abused and treated cruelly. So I would ask you to please save out animals from the abuse that they suffer while on board the live export ships and ban the trade.
