Jamie Dimon
CEO of JPMorgan Chase

Dear Jamie Dimon:

It is unacceptable for JPMorgan Chase to finance tar sands –– one of the dirtiest sources of energy on the planet. By choosing to finance this disastrous sector, your bank is driving climate change and abusing human rights.

You yourself disagreed with President Trump when he pulled out of the Paris Climate Accord. To walk the walk, you must talk the talk –– and that starts with defunding tar sands. Your bank is the top Wall Street funder of tar sands, whose expansion is incompatible with the Paris Accords’ aim to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees. If tar sands exploitation continues unchecked, it’s “game over for the climate,” warns NASA scientist James Hansen.

On the ground, tar sands production harms the health of communities at the frontlines of extraction and the fencelines of refineries. Despite Indigenous and grassroots opposition, your bank is still financing all four proposed tar sands pipelines: TransCanada's Keystone XL and Energy East, Enbridge's Line 3 and Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain. Meanwhile, the link between extreme weather and extreme fossil fuels is more clear than ever before.

I call upon you to step up as a leader by taking a serious stride to stop driving climate change and start respecting human rights. JPMorgan Chase must not only stop funding tar sands pipelines, but end financing to the tar sands sector as a whole.

Signed,
