We need you to help us use tourism to benefit mountain gorillas. Mountain gorillas in Rwanda and Uganda are being hunted into extinction. There are currently less than 1,000 mountain gorillas remaining in the wild. The biggest threats to these critically endangered great apes come from deforestation and the region’s growing population. The locals depend on the natural resources and wildlife-based tourism for their welfare. So, the future of mountain gorillas will be closely linked with the peace and prosperity through the land. Locals need an income dependent on the gorillas.

Local Poachers are killing gorillas to sell their meat or various parts of their body, or sometimes they capture gorillas and keep them alive and to sell them as exotic pets or for private collections of animals. National geographic warns that “Increasingly, mining and logging camps are hiring professional poachers to provide "bush meat" wild animal flesh for their workers and for refugees who've fled nearby conflict. Though gorillas still make up a tiny percentage of the bush-meat trade, losses can be devastating, because gorilla numbers are already so low and their communities are so tightly knit.

The African wildlife foundation have designed and constructed tourism lodges benefitting the mountain gorillas of Rwanda and Uganda — and their respective communities. The Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, in the foothills of the Virunga Mountains, and Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, outside of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, are community-owned tourist lodges that benefit the local people who share their backyard with gorillas by generating income through tourism. This alternate income will mean that they don’t have to poach gorillas for a living and food.

I believe that there’s needs to be a stop put poaching gorillas and laws enforced because It’s a crime and it’s driving species to extinction. Gorillas are particularly vulnerable, their body parts being prized in traditional Asian medicine and being sold as bush-meat. From 2003 to 2010 our work in the Virunga Forest on the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda helped increase gorillas by 26%, from 380 to 480. We know deep inside that these magnificent animals matter. And yet we’ve driven many of them towards the brink of extinction through poaching. By starting this advertising campaign to increase tourism in the area it will not only help the locals but give them a source of income to help stop this terrible scourge of poaching.
