Barnaby Joyce Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources

Dear Barnaby Joyce
I want to stop overfishing in the ocean. Fish are very important and we need to be sure that fish species are flourishing for future generations. Super trawlers must be banned from the waters off Tasmania completely. In 2015, the Federal Government banned super trawlers over 130 metres in length by regulation. But this regulation does not stop smaller trawlers and their unsustainable fishing methods being used. Barnaby Joyce, you need to ban trawlers completely. It’s important because trawlers are still obviously using unsustainable methods, using their huge nets to scoop thousands of fish out of the water and if this doesn’t stop we risk depleting our oceans to the point that they won’t recover
The most recent figures indicate that over 85% of the world’s fish stocks are now fished up to full capacity. This means that the oceans are increasingly being overfished. This overfishing must be put to a stop as people rely on fish as their main food intake and with the fish stocks going to new lows, people are being forced to find different food. In addition, overfishing has huge impacts on the ocean’s ecosystem. Overfishing can wreak havoc and destroy the environment and marine ecology and completely disrupt the food chain. For example, herring is a vital prey species for cod, and it has been overfished leaving the cod to search for new prey. Overfishing really needs to be stopped because 35% of the world’s population gets most of their protein from ocean animals; the world’s ocean is the biggest source of food for the whole planet. The continuing of overfishing will just make the oceans ecosystem completely collapse, which would have devastating impacts on fish population.
If you, Barnaby Joyce, make a complete ban on trawls being used in Tasmanian waters, the fish species there will have a chance to flourish once again. This will also show other nations that a ban on super trawlers and the method of trawling for fish has positive outcomes and could help the fish crisis worldwide.
You, Barnaby Joyce, are in a powerful position as Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources and if you decide to follow through with my request, overfishing would be completely stopped around Tasmania, having a great impact on the oceans ecosystem and letting the fish species flourish once more.

Yours sincerely,
Ashton Wilson

Mr Joyce is in the position to stop this because as
Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, it is his responsibility to look after and maintain the ocean's ecosystem.

If we can get enough names on this petition Barnaby
Joyce will have no choice but to read the petition and consider it as a possible solution to overfishing.
