Pledge to

ONLY speak at conferences when the speakers are diverse.

Learn how to do this...

How to do this

Complete these steps by December 31

  1. 1

When event organizers approach me to speak at their event, I will tell them about my pledge.

  2. 2

I will ask "Who else is speaking? Is the line-up diverse? Which segments of your audience are represented?"

  3. 3

If the organizers are struggling to find speakers outside their usual social networks, I will offer them my list of referrals and recommendations of people whom they may wish to invite to speak.

  4. 4

When it is clear that the speaker line-up is diverse, then I will agree to participate.

It is normal and routine for the speakers at conferences and panels to be disproportionately drawn from one segment of the audience and society - even at events dedicated to empowerment or social change.

It's on those of us who benefit from this selection bias to change it.

We can change this by refusing to participate as speakers at events when the speaker line-up is not diverse.

It's only when we require change that change happens. Let's pledge to make it happen.
