Sign the Petition to

Malcom Turnbull, Prime Minister of Australia

We are writing to you in the hopes to you will act about the serious issue that is deforestation. Deforestation threatens Australia’s environment and biodiversity. We are certain that your social influence could change how Australia addresses deforestation the issue, political setting a good example to other world leaders.

Australia clears approximately 564,800 hectares of land per year. This is the equivalent in size to 18 times the city of Sydney per week. Australia has already lost 25% of its rainforest, 45% of its open forest, 32% of its woodland forest and its 30% of Mallee forest in 200 years. Clearing forests increases the salinity of the soil and forest fragmentation has an adverse effect on the biodiversity of animals and plants. Also, a decline in soil fertility and deforestation affects, local temperatures, precipitation patterns and increase of temperatures while reducing rainfall. The population of Australian wildlife is already vulnerable. Deforestation puts some species at risk so they become endangered or even extinct. As the Prime Minster of Australia it is your responsibility to address this issue straight away.

We ask that you implement tighter restrictions on the legal limits of land clearing and impose harsh penalties on those who breach this law. We also request that you situate boundaries around rehabilitating forests, or ones that contain endangered or threatened species of animals. These actions will decrease the rate of deforestation in Australia, and will also encourage other world leaders to follow suit.

As the Prime Minister of Australia you hold the responsibility preventing further destruction of Australia’s vast forests and protecting species of animals within them. Mr Turnbull, deforestation is a serious problem and is threatening the future of Australia’s wildlife and complex biodiversity rich forests. If action is not taken soon the destruction maybe irreversible. Please act on this matter.

Yours sincerely
Nathan Mccallum
