April 17 2016 marked the 200 year anniversary of the Appin Massacre in which more than 14 innocent Dharawal (Tharawal) people were shot by British troops and an unknown number jumped to their deaths near Cataract Dam in Appin near Sydney. NSW Governor Macquarie's orders after several whites were killed "To inflict a terrible and exemplary punishments" was in direct conflict with King George IIIs instructions "by every possible means to open an Intercourse with the Natives and to conciliate their affections, enjoining all Our Subjects to live in amity and kindness with them." This incident was a pivotal moment in relations between our two peoples ( White and Indigenous) being the first instance of a Governor sanctioned collective punishment against the innocent being carried out. His Excellency NSW Governor David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d) who attended the ceremony but did not speak, should in the spirit of Reconciliation make a formal apology in 2017 to the Dharawal People for this most grievous act which would in today's world be a considered a crime against humanity.

Signed,

Russell Kilbey
