Grant O’Brien, CEO of Woolworths

Dear Mr O’Brien

We believe you are in a position of authority to make changes in order to help save orangutans from extinction. Many products sold by your company contain palm oil which was harvested from plantations that destroyed orangutan habitats.

Over 100 years ago there were thought to be approximately 315,000 orangutans in the wild. There are now less than 6,600 left in Sumatra, and less than 54,000 in Borneo. This beautiful creature is in danger of extinction. The main threat to them is the fact their habitat is being destroyed make way for palm oil plantations. At least 10.8 hectares of forest has been lost in Sumatra and a similar amount has been lost in Borneo all to make room for palm oil plantations. It is estimated that 1,000 orangutans are killed a year, and a major factor in these deaths is forest clearing for palm production. In 2006, at least 1,500 orangutans were clubbed to death by palm workers when they tried to return to their habitat. In fact, 40-50% of household products contain palm oil. You sell these products in Woolworths stores so can make a difference to the survival of orangutans.

We ask that you shelve products which contain palm oil separately from products that are palm-oil free. We also request that you put an eye-catching information poster near palm oil products so consumers know how palm oil effects orangutans. In addition, we would like you to put a sticker on products that contain palm-oil. In these ways people who visit Woolworths can make a choice about which products they choose, knowing that palm oil products are the main reason orangutan habitat is being destroyed.

As CEO of Woolworths, we believe that you have power to make a difference to palm oil deforestation which is likely to lead to the extinction of orangutans. Your company can lead the way for other supermarkets like Coles and Aldi, showing them that consumers will prefer to shop at a supermarket that cares about animals like the orangutan.

Yours sincerely

There are now less than 6,600 orangutans left in Sumatra, and less than 54,000 left in Borneo. This beautiful creature is in danger of extinction. The main threat to orangutans is the fact their habitat is being destroyed to make way for palm oil plantations. In fact, 40-50% of household products contain palm oil. Woolworths is a major supermarket in Australia so if the CEO of Woolworths takes action to discourage consumers from buying palm oil products then this should decrease deforestation of orangutan habitats. Please sign this petition to show the CEO of Woolworths that consumers want him to take action to save orangutans from extinction.
