Mr Jean Paul Agon, CEO of L’Oreal

Dear Mr Agon

We are writing about the issue of animal testing. We believe you are in a position of power to make changes in order to cease inhumane practice on animals in all companies under L’Oreal’s authority, including Maybelline and Lancôme.

In 2014 it was found that 92% of animal testing of beauty products did not pass ethical testing standards. Animals, mainly beagles, in some of your testing facilities are being routinely blinded by soap to the eye. Other animals are kept captive in tiny cages, without painkillers to relieve the pain after tests that burn them and irritate their skin to the point of infection. What’s worse, there’s no need for this cruelty because Harvard have designed a computer that simulates human responses to products by simulating human DNA. This provides more accurate testing results than using animals and has no cruelty involved.

As CEO you have an obligation to do something about cruelty in your testing facilities. L’Oreal has 5.3% of the world’s cosmetic market. Your company claims to have stopped animal testing in 1989 but in reality this is not true. L’Oreal doesn’t test finishes products on animals but it still tests ingredients on animals. We know that L’Oreal owns Maybelline, which has 7.4% of the cosmetic market and still continuously tests on animals. In addition, L’Oreal also owns Lancôme which has 4% of the market share and tests on animals. Clearly, your company has a huge percentage of the market so if your companies stopped testing on animals, it would mean a large number of animals would not suffer in labs.

We request that you stop testing on animals and use Harvard’s computer option or another technological testing method that doesn’t involve the suffering or death of animals. This would not just cease the torture of animals but would also bring your companies into the twenty-first century in your use of technology. We also ask that while you are phasing out animal testing, you label your products so people know if the products are still involved in animal testing.

Think of the improved reputation for your companies if you stopped testing on animals. Surely this would lead to increased business and profit from consumers who want no part of animal testing. We ask you to take immediate action about this matter.

Yours sincerely
Acer Owen

In 2014 it was found that 92% of animal testing of beauty products did not pass ethical testing standards. L'Oreal has 5.3% of the world's cosmetic market and also owns Maybelline, which has 7.4% of the cosmetic market, and Lancôme which has 4% of the market share. If these companies stopped testing on animals, it would mean a large number of animals would not suffer in labs. Please sign this petition so Mr Agon, the CEO of L'Oreal, can be persuaded to do the right thing by stopping animal testing in L'Oreal and companies it owns.
