Grant O'Brian, CEO of Woolworths

Dear Mr O’Brian

We are writing to you about the issue of the endangered orangutans. We believe that you are in a position of power to make changes in Woolworths that will encourage other supermarkets to make a change that will help to cease the deforestation for palm oil plantations that leads to the slaughter of orangutans, which are peaceful animals.

At present there are around 60 000 orangutans left in the wild; with 55 000 on Sumatra and a little over 5 000 on Borneo. Yet these numbers are quickly depleting. Over five thousand Sumatran orangutans are killed every year with one thousand Bornean orangutans dying each year as well. The main reason that orangutans are endangered is due to deforestation for palm oil plantations. The amount of deforestation occurring in orangutan habitat is the equivalent of 300 football fields per hour. If this continues, the orangutan will become extinct. Did you know that about half the products on supermarket shelves contain palm oil? That means Woolworths can help stop deforestation.

We ask that you separate products that contain palm oil from other options on shelves in all Woolworths stores. We also ask that you clearly label products that contain palm oil. In this way your consumers can make an informed decision about which products they ought to purchase. Anyone with a conscience will surely reconsider purchasing palm oil products. Without profits from palm oil, manufacturers will use alternative ingredients. This will help save orangutan habitats from deforestation.

It is up to you as the person with highest authority in Woolworths to make a difference that will prevent the extinction of our great ancestors the orangutans. Please act promptly.

Yours sincerely,
Jake McMahon

The main reason that orangutans are endangered is due to deforestation for palm oil plantations. The amount of deforestation occurring in orangutan habitat is the equivalent of 300 football fields per hour. Nearly 50% of the products on supermarket shelves contain palm oil. As the CEO of Woolworths, Grant O'Brian has the power to make a difference to one of the biggest grocery shopping centres in the world. Please sign this petition, to convince Mr O'Brian to act to reduce the sales of products containing palm oil in Woolworths stores.
