Tell These Industry Giants that "Poison Isn't Pretty"

To:
Gary M. Reedy, CEO, American Cancer Society
Louanne Roark, Executive Director, Personal Care Products Council Foundation

As someone concerned about protecting patients and preventing cancer, I am calling on you to stop pinkwashing.

If you truly care about women with breast cancer, you will not allow corporations to participate in the Look Good, Feel Better® program if they make products with chemicals linked to increasing cancer risk or interfering with breast cancer treatment.

I’m outraged because I know there is nothing pretty about allowing toxins in the products you’re giving to women in cancer treatment.

A clear and growing body of scientific evidence demonstrates the role of toxic chemicals in increasing our risk of breast cancer. If you really care about women with breast cancer, you need to start taking the health risks associated with these chemicals seriously.

Breast Cancer Action found that cosmetic and personal care products in the Look Good, Feel Better makeup kits contained a number of chemicals of concern linked to breast cancer risk. These include parabens, formaldehyde releasers, Teflon, and "fragrance," a term that can conceal a variety of chemicals harmful to our health. They also found methylparaben, which can not only increases breast cancer risk but may also interfere with the common cancer drug Tamoxifen.

Women everywhere deserve better. And women who participate in the Look Good, Feel Better program, as well as the cosmetologists who volunteer their time and expertise, certainly deserve more from the largest national trade group for the cosmetics industry and the nation’s largest cancer charity.

As leaders in your industries, you are in powerful positions to set the highest standard for the safety of personal care products in the Look Good, Feel Better program—and on store shelves across the country. I urge you to step up and ensure that no more women are exposed to harmful chemicals in personal care products that put their health at risk.

As a first step in this commitment, I call on you to block corporations from participating in the Look Good, Feel Better program if their products contain chemicals linked to increasing cancer risk or interfering with breast cancer treatment.

That would really make women feel better.

Signed,

Breast Cancer Action
