U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Acting Director Stephen Guertin

Along with all 2.4 million Sierra Club members and supporters, I support protection of the Big Sandy and Guyandotte River crayfish under the Endangered Species Act, including designation of critical habitat.

These species need clean water and silt-free, rocky stream bottoms in order to survive. Unfortunately, coal mining and other industrial development in upstream areas is degrading their habitat and eliminating these species from streams. Existing regulations under the Clean Water Act and Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act have proven insufficient to prevent continuing loss of these species' habitat. Please act now to protect these crayfish before they're wiped out completely.

Like the Big Sandy and Guyandotte River crayfish, we all need clean water that's free of coal mining pollution. Please list these species as endangered and begin protecting the streams and rivers they need to survive.
