UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, OIC, US, ASEAN: Save Rohingya

Abandoned at sea, thousands of boatpeople of Myanmar’s persecuted Muslim Rohingya minority have no place to go. The states of Southeast Asia are closing down their frontiers and refusing to provide protection to the victims of apartheid-like discrimination and marginalization. Those who succeed to get off the boats become victims of human traffickers. They are abused as slaves on rubber plantations, on fishing boats, or they are tortured by human traffickers in death camps.

Human trafficking in Southeast Asia will not stop until Myanmar stops the persecution of the Muslim minority and provides citizenship to Rohingya.

Every day new mass graves are discovered in the jungle of southern Thailand. The victims, Rohingya Muslims, are tortured or deliberately starved to death by human traffickers trying to extort ransom fees from their relatives. Only a few dozen people, out of hundreds of trafficking victims, have survived the ordeal. The traumatized survivors report massive abuses, but they fear deportation to Myanmar so they feel they have no choice but to stay in the death camps. Even today, after the discovery of the death camps, the survivors fear that they might be deported to Myanmar.

Since January 2015 some 25,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar due to massive human rights violations and persecution. Since the outbreak of violence between Muslim Rohingya and Buddhist Rakhines in the year 2012, around 140,000 Rohingya were crowded in camps because their houses and villages were destroyed. Instead of reconciliation efforts and measures to build confidence between the communities, Myanmar authorities have refused to search for any political solution of the crisis. The authorities even legalized the discrimination of Rohingya in new laws.

The persecution has led to a mass exodus of more than 100,000 Rohingya who searched for protection in neighboring countries. But even the Muslim majority countries, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Malaysia, are denying protection to the persecuted Muslim minority. This is shameful because the civil society in these Muslim countries urgently called on their governments to assist Rohingya and to protect their basic human rights. The United Nations have called on Myanmar to ensure the human rights of its Rohingya minority and to stop the mass exodus by providing the Rohingya citizenship.

Let's take a stand for the Muslim Rohingya! Let's save lives together!
