Steven miles, Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection, Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef

Dear Mr Miles,

As the newly appointed Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection, Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef we need you to take action on Plastic pollution. We also believe that you are in a position to take action to address this issue.

Action is needed to take place against plastic pollution, and enforce stronger laws of litterers. It is needed because sea life are becoming endangered and large garbage patches are growing every day in the ocean. Over the last ten years we have produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century. In fact enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times. We currently recover only five percent of the plastics we produce, and 50 percent of the plastic we use, we use just once and throw away. Plastic constitutes approximately 90 percent of all trash floating on the ocean’s surface, with 46,000 pieces of plastic per square mile, this creates a great problem for the sea life. If we don’t take action soon, the majority sea life will no longer be able to live in the sea and become endangered or even worse, extinct.
By taking action against plastic pollution we can start to reverse the effect of plastic in our oceans, the water will become cleaner and more of a liveable area for sea life and an enjoyable place for the human race. If we put a stop to plastic pollution as a state we can trigger a snowball affect onto other States and Countries of the world and eventually create a plastic free planet.

Your government will be judged on its ability to stop plastic pollution. The eyes of the world are watching! Obviously it is time that action is taken to ban plastic bags in Queensland. We ask that you will ban the use of plastic bags in Queensland. This will dramatically reduce the amount of plastic pollution in Queensland. In addition, by making this dramatic move you would show the world that the Queensland Government has a strong view on environment pollution. You need to take action immediately

Yours sincerely,
Brock Wells
