International Whaling Commission

Dear International Whaling Commission,

We believe that the killing of dolphins in Japan is an extremely important issue. We also believe that you are in a position to take action to address this issue. The slaughter of dolphins in Japan must be stopped.

Currently 20,000 cetaceans are killed in Japan each year. Up to 2000 of these are dolphins which are slaughtered in the town of Taiji. The fishermen in Taiji are brutally slaughtering these innocent beings to be sold into entertainment of killed for their meat. The way in which these dolphins are killed is inhumane, a metal rod is hammered into the dolphin’s spinal cord causing paralysis. A wooden stake is then stabbed into the wound to stop the blood, making it look ‘less harmful’ and causing the dolphin to internally bleed to a slow death.

The meat from the slaughtered dolphins is being mislabelled and sold as more expensive whale meat, while the small minority (36 in 2014) are sold into slavery, for up to $200,000, to be used in dolphinariums such as SeaWorld.

Change is needed as the dolphin meat is being sold to the Japanese public, poisoning them with high levels of mercury unknowingly. Mercury poisoning would have a devastating impact on generations of Japanese people. Mercury poisoning causes harm to the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, and immune system. It is extremely dangerous for pregnant women as it can cause birth defects. As a result of media reports on this issue it has affected the way the public looks at Japan. Something needs to be done.

By stopping the slaughter of dolphins it draw negative media attention away from Japan, save the Japanese people from mercury poisoning and save the dolphins. It will also help the fight against the captivity of these animals for entertainment.

Your organisation will be judged on its ability to take action against the fishermen that are slaughtering dolphins. We trust that you take immediate action as this has been going on for too long.

Yours sincerely,

Signed,

Brad Hanlon

Requesting action from the IWC is important as they have the biggest influence on the decisions made towards international whaling regulation. They are in the position to do so as they have representatives from 88 countries to voice their opinions to change international regulations regarding whaling. The IWC have the ability to change the laws related to whaling around the world. It is important to get people behind this issue as it will force change. If this petition gets numerous followers it would make it easier to capture the attention of the IWC. It is important that the IWC knows people are concerned with this issue before it is too late. If we do not stop this issue thousands of dolphins will continued to be captured, killed, kept for slavery and sold as poisonous food to the Japanese people.
