Together, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and malnutrition contribute to the unnecessary suffering of the world’s poorest people. Poor nutrition increases susceptibility to parasitic disease infections, while NTDs, like intestinal worms and schistosomiasis, are underlying causes of stunting, wasting and micronutrient deficiencies. These NTDs often lead to anemia, delayed childhood growth and poor pregnancy outcomes, perpetuating the cycle of disease, malnutrition, poverty and inequality.

Because NTDs and malnutrition are so closely linked, your organizations — the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) — have a unique opportunity to address these issues simultaneously, drawing on your collective expertise and leadership. By integrating NTD treatment with nutrition interventions such as Vitamin A and iron supplementation, you can have a greater impact on the world’s most vulnerable communities.

As a citizen concerned about the well-being of the world’s most vulnerable populations, I call on you to expand access to routine deworming treatments for all populations at risk, including pre-school- and school-aged children, women of childbearing age and pregnant women through existing treatments and delivery platforms. I also urge you to mobilize greater political support by raising the visibility of the links between NTDs and malnutrition at the international and regional levels and with ministries of health and agriculture.

With your leadership, the world’s most vulnerable communities who suffer from malnutrition and NTDs can live healthier lives.

Signed,

Together, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and malnutrition contribute to the unnecessary suffering of millions of children. Because ending NTDs is essential to improving nutrition, and vice versa, addressing these issues together will improve the lives of the poor. Help the world's most marginalized populations by adding your name here and asking Director-General Margaret Chan and Director-General José Graziano da Silva to integrate efforts to help vulnerable communities. Your support is vital.
