Manus Island has claimed another victim as an asylum seeker has been declared 'brain dead'.
A 24yr old Iranian asylum seeker, Hamid Kehazaei was urgently medivacced to a Brisbane hospital from Manus Island on Wednesday 27 August after seeking medical attention for days for the pain and infection from a cut foot. By the time he left Manus Is he was suffering septicaemia. Several days ago he suffered a heart attack & on 2 September the Immigration Department and the hospital informed the family that he was confirmed as 'brain dead'. He remains on life support.
The hospital has told the family that 'a guardian' will be appointed at 'some stage' to decide on the withdrawal of life support!
It has been reported that there are scores of infections on Manus Island and many complaints of the lack of medical attention. Statements have been made that asylum seekers often have to walk through raw sewerage due to the inadequacy of systems provided.

Australians are people who have been proud to claim their nationality and their values of a fair-go for all, and a heritage of looking out for the underdog. Over the past year under the current Federal government a climate of determination to break the spirits of all asylum seekers whether they are onshore in detention centres, in community detention or on bridging visas, and especially if they are in off-shore detention facilities has increased dramatically and cruelly. There is no leniency no matter what the age of the refugee. A 99yr old refugee was held for over 1 yr in a detention centre. Babies as young as 6 wks have been sent to off-shore detention centres. This MUST STOP!
This petition calls all Australians to stop the killing and death of asylum seekers through petitioning all members of government no matter what party to stop this abuse of human rights and close all detention centres and bring all in off-shore facilities to Australia so that their claims can be processed. It also calls on anyone in the International community to join the pleas for the recognition of Human Rights & the Convention on Refugees.

Lorraine Brosnan

Australia has breached many articles of the Declaration on Human Rights and the Convention on Refugees despite being a signatory to both especially over the past year, by cruel policies and procedures intent on breaking the minds, and spirits of people seeking asylum.  Australia needs to be challenged on this, and consequently on its place on the UN Security Council.
