NYC continues to contract with the ACC yet does nothing to help them become a no kill shelter. There is no point in NYC giving them a contract that requires them to take in all animals, when an abnormally large percentage of them are perfectly healthy and are killed. There are members of NYC government on the Board which is a conflict of Interest. The staff is overworked and in many cases incompetent and cruel. The board needs to be disbanded and people with experience in turning large city shelter to no kill for adoptables need to be appointed to run the show. It's happening in cities all over the country. It needs to happen in NYC. It needs to happen now. Aside from firing the board, other actions can be taken such as no live pet sales of unhealthy soon to be dumped puppy mill dogs; more arrests for dog fighting. NYC needs to care for its animals and take responsibility for them. The Mayors Alliance just throws money at the ACC and does nothing to correct the abuses that continue there every single day.

I believe that societies can easily be judged by how they treat their animals. NYC is shameful in their record of protecting this vulnerable population. In other cities, people kept speaking out and things have changed. In large cities like Detroit, there are city supported shelters that are no kill of adoptables. In cities like San Diego and Chicago it is now illegal for pet store owners to sell dogs (which all come from brokers who deal with puppy mills) It's more than time for animal lovers and advocates to take a loud stand against NYC's lack of responsibility when it comes to caring for its stray and abandoned cats and dogs.
