Dear Mr. President,
The ongoing catastrophe in Iraq has some calling for renewed U.S. military intervention there, including possible air or drone strikes, increased arms transfers and deployment of U.S. troops to support the Iraqi army. We urge you to reject these calls! Don’t try to put out this fire with gasoline!
The violence in Iraq is alarming, yet hardly a surprise given the deep divisions caused by the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. U.S. military strikes and increased weapons transfers to Iraq can only make matters worse for the people of Iraq. As you recently noted, the U.S. may have the biggest hammer, but every problem is not a nail.
Please refrain from military escalation in Iraq, and invest instead in refugee assistance, humanitarian aid, diplomacy and international cooperation to stem the tide of violence in Iraq and the region.

No more weapons shipments, no airstrikes, no US troops. The chaotic situation in Iraq is the direct result of the tragic US military intervention in 2003, which destabilized the region and put in power a corrupt and unrepresentative government. The people of Iraq need peace, reconciliation, development and a truly representative government, free of US and other foreign interests.
