It has been four years since the spill, yet BP oil continues to impact wetlands, beaches, and wildlife habitat in the Gulf. Dolphins living in the northern Gulf are sick and dying -- sick with symptoms that may have been caused by oil exposure.
According to scientists it will be many years, even decades, before we understand the true impact of the roughly four million barrels of crude oil unleashed on the ecosystem of the Gulf of Mexico. But right now, scientists say we can make a difference by making sure the RESTORE Act fines and the National Resources Damages Assessment funds are dedicated to restoring the environmental health of the Gulf.
Please ensure that fines paid by BP are used to restore Gulf ecosystems that were so extensively damaged by the oil disaster. It is crucial for dolphins and other Gulf wildlife that restoration funds are used for environmental restoration projects -- rather than for unrelated projects such as port expansions or development projects in sensitive coastal habitats.
