Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez

A new report from Human Rights Watch exposes the fact that children as young as 12 are working in American tobacco fields. According to the report, "Children reported vomiting, nausea, headaches, and dizziness while working on tobacco farms, all symptoms consistent with acute nicotine poisoning. Many also said they worked long hours without overtime pay, often in extreme heat without shade or sufficient breaks, and wore no, or inadequate, protective gear."

In 2012, your department proposed reforms to agricultural child labor laws, but then withdrew those proposals under political pressure. Our children's health is more important than politics or Big Tobacco's profits -- please take action and ban Big Tobacco from employing our children in their fields!

Signed,

How this will help

Eddie is just 15, but works on a tobacco farm: "You just feel like you're suffocating." 12-year olds are working long hours in extreme heat without sufficient breaks, overtime pay, or protective gear!
