UNITED NATIONS and the INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT

WE DEMAND THAT, DURING TIMES OF ARMED CONFLICT, FACILITIES WHERE WILD ANIMALS ARE CONTAINED BE “NON-MILITARY TARGETS.”

When wildlife is caged or contained in specific areas for the purpose of conservation, research, training, and public education and awareness, full responsibility must be taken for their safety and humane treatment. The abandonment and neglect of wild animals in captivity in times of armed conflict is one of the most flagrant violations of this principle. We are petitioning that the following be adopted as International Law, and extreme violations of them be deemed as war crimes.

Signed,

LAEO

-  During times of armed conflict, there is an obligation on the part of all parties to respect and protect caged or contained wildlife. This includes places that preserve, research, breed, treat, and study wild animals such as zoos, veterinary clinics, wildlife and marine reserves, and other similar facilities. These facilities must be given the same status as schools, hospitals, and churches; in other words, non-military targets and not for use in military operations.

- Those persons who continue to protect and maintain wild animals in captivity and wildlife and marine reserves during periods of armed conflict must be granted the same status as medical and religious personnel under the Geneva Conventions.
