To an accountant, something of positive economic value is an asset. To a model, it's good looks. To a politician, it's charisma. But to a child in foster care, an asset is someone to count on.
CWLA's National Blueprint for Excellence in Child Welfare declares we are all responsible for ensuring the safety, permanency, and well-being of all children and youth. That role is different for every person, and no one can be everything for all kids. But from a child's perspective, there must be at least one person who is indispensable.
Indispensable assets are mothers, fathers, grandparents, kin, social workers, foster parents, teachers, coaches, pastors, and mentors who provide the love, support, and guidance children need. Until all children are safe in loving families and supportive communities, with everything they need to flourish, we must leverage all assets to ensure their resilience and healthy development.
To raise awareness about the importance of supporting children and youth, CWLA is sharing stories of children's assets—the humble heroes of our community who give of themselves to make sure a child has someone on whom they can depend. (Find them here: http://bit.ly/FCMonthStories )
Will you join us? Check out the stories CWLA has collected of people who are the main support for a child or youth who has been in, is in or is at risk of entering foster care. Then, pass them along! Send the link to a friend, post a story on your Facebook page, or relay it to someone at your next cocktail party.
These inspiring accounts are sure to motivate folks to open their eyes to the children in their lives that need support; to look into mentoring, foster care, or kinship care; to be the one person who is indispensable to a child. But they must be heard. Can the kids count on you to raise awareness for them?
Every child needs someone to ensure that they grow up healthy and safe with every opportunity to flourish. Take the pledge to inspire our community to leverage all assets for children.
