Eddie and Pearl Jam,
I want to start out saying how much I appreciate not only your music, but the responsibly you’ve taken on using music as a vehicle for political awareness. You stand for what is best about rock music.
With that said, I cannot understand your recent investment and support of Dropbox in the wake of the appointment of Condoleezza Rice to the board of directors. Is this the type of leadership you support? I don't think so. I know it’s not.
You've been an outspoken critic of Bush-era policies including the Iraq War and the "torture" of prisoners. The latter issue is one that Pearl Jam actively campaigned against after it surfaced that the Bush government was using music as a torture tactic. That’s the band I know. Condoleezza Rice represents this era; she represents the very policies Pearl Jam has spoken out against for decades.
Perhaps the most relevant contradiction to Dr. Rice's appointment is her documented disregard for privacy. She helped lead some of the most widespread domestic spying in US history while also approving warrantless wiretaps. This is alarming considering the trust that 275 million users put into Dropbox to protect their files.
Today I'm asking you to act like the band I remember by standing up for what is right. I understand that your investment is important and I understand that Dropbox CEO, Drew Houston, is a huge fan, if not a good friend, but this is not right.
I'm a fan too. Help me remember why.
Please stop hosting your music on Dropbox and publicly voice your opposition to Dr. Rice's appointment.

Let me start by saying we love Pearl Jam. For decades they've used their music for political awareness and civic action. They're everything that is great about rock music. Ask any music fan and they will likely list Pearl Jam as one of the most musically and politically influential bands of the last 25 years. They. Are. Awesome.
That's why we were shocked to hear that Pearl Jam was supporting Dropbox with a big investment around the same time the company was appointing Condoleezza Rice to its board of directors. Condoleezza Rice stands for so much of what Pearl Jam has fought against with us for decades. Whether it be the Iraq War, or freedom of speech Pearl Jam has stood up for what is right. They have even gone as far as starting a campaign against US torture of prisoners. Supporting the appointment of Condoleezza Rice to the board of directors just doesn't make sense. It's not the band we know!
Condoleezza Rice oversaw warrentless wiretaps, she was at the helm in a time of unprecedented domestic surveillance, and left a legacy of mistrust and disregard for privacy in DC (not to mention torture). This is not the legacy Dropbox should aspire to share with their 275 million customers. They deserve better.
Pearl Jam took a stand against the Iraq War, they stood up for gun control, and they have never shied away from what is right just because of controversy. It's now time to stand up for all the 275 million users of a company they are committed to.
