First Lady Michelle Obama

Dear Michelle Obama,

Thank you for your leadership in making the White House gardens a shining example of the importance of organic food production for the health of our families and our planet. Thank you also for bringing bees to your garden, creating habitat for the pollinators which are essential to one out of three bites of food we eat, and which are dying off globally in record numbers.

Beekeepers have reported record losses of 50-90 percent of their bees and many farmers are facing shortages of bees needed to pollinate their crops.

Without immediate action, bee-pollinated foods from apples to strawberries will start to disappear from grocery stores shelves.

A growing body of science is pointing to the world’s most widely-used class of pesticides called neonicotinoids,as the key factor in bee declines.

Last year, the European Union placed a two year ban on most neonicotinoids -- but the EPA is ignoring mounting scientific evidence and has delayed action until 2018. But the bees are telling us we can’t wait that long.

As our nation’s first lady and gardener-in-chief, please set an example for the nation by banning bee-killing pesticides from the White House gardens and grounds and urging the EPA and Congress to take swift action to protect bees and other pollinators.

Our bees and our children thank you!

Signed,

Friends of the Earth

This year, first lady Michelle Obama has added a pollinator garden to the White House Kitchen Garden to support bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Like many backyard gardeners, the first lady is doing her part to create habitat for bees, which are essential to one out of three bites of food we eat, and which are dying off globally in record numbers.

Because of the global bee crisis, and because we believe that Mrs. Obama understands the importance of pesticide-free organic gardening and the importance of healthy bees for the health of our food supply, the health of our families and the health of our planet, we're asking her to join us in standing up for bees. Please ask Michelle Obama to set an example for the nation by banning bee-killing pesticides from the White House gardens and urging the EPA and Congress to take swift action to protect bees and other pollinators.
