Dear Mr Abbott,
We are writing to you to bring to your attention a global issue that deeply concerns us. We believe that puppy mills need immediate attention. In puppy mills, animals can spend most of their lives in cramped cages with no room to play or exercise. There is no climate control and constant exposure to conditions of the weather (which can include extreme heat, cold, rain or snow) or alternatively no access to fresh air or sunshine. The food is often inadequate and there is no veterinary care. We believe that you are in a position to take action to address this issue.
Your government and leadership role will be judged on its ability to make amendments to the current regulations for dog breeders. The eyes of the Australian voters are watching! Obviously it is time that action is taken to stop the cruelty towards dogs and puppies which occurs in puppy mills. We ask that you put in place laws and regulations to ensure that all dog breeders in Australia must provide the dogs not only with access to food, water and shelter, but also with veterinary care, cages appropriate for their size, high quality maintenance of living conditions and regular exercise and socialisation. We also ask that you employ inspectors to enforce these new laws and regulations. In addition, we request harsh consequences for people who do not follow the laws and regulations.
The treatment of dogs in Australian puppy mills is not acceptable. It’s an injustice and it needs to be stopped immediately. By taking the requested actions, you would show the world that Australia is serious about shutting down puppy mills. We trust that you will act promptly on this matter.

At the moment in Australia dog breeders only have to supply dogs with access to food, water and shelter. This is not good enough and the Prime Minister of Australia needs to take action to change this. What dog breeders do to animals in puppy mills is a crime and there should be laws and regulations like those specified in the petition. If you agree, sign this petition to help pressure Prime Minister Tony Abbott to take action to shut down puppy mills.
