Sign the Petition to

CVS CEO Larry J. Merlo

Dear Mr. Merlo,

I want to alert you to a problem on a falsely labeled “organic” product that poses serious health risks to children and families and urge you to take the product off your shelves.

In California, the “Organics by Africa’s Best” line of hair care products was recently forced to change its name. Despite the brand name, these products contain no organic ingredients, and under California law they cannot be sold as labeled. Some of these products, including children’s products, contain chemicals that can cause blindness, and one was recently found with a cancer-causing ingredient.

For the sake of children’s health and in support of truthful organic labeling, I urge CVS/Caremark to remove all “Organics by Africa’s Best” products from your store shelves nationwide. All of us deserve safe, truthful products, not just those who live in California.

Signed,

Center for Environmental Health

How this will help

You might be surprised to find that the "organic" hair care product you bought for your child has a small-print warning that reads: "KEEP AWAY FROM EYES, CAN CAUSE BLINDNESS."

You also might be...

You might be surprised to find that the "organic" hair care product you bought for your child has a small-print warning that reads: "KEEP AWAY FROM EYES, CAN CAUSE BLINDNESS."

You also might be surprised that "organic" shampoo made by the company that makes this child's product was found with high levels of a cancer-causing chemical.

But if the products are made by Africa's Best (the leading brand by a company called House of Cheatham), you shouldn't be surprised. CEH has warned families about these products before. We sued the company for its phony organic labels, and won a court settlement that required the company to change its name. But because federal regulators have failed to address the issue of phony organic labels on cosmetics and personal care products, the company is still allowed to peddle nasty, chemical-tainted phony "organic" hair products in 49 states and overseas.

So if you live outside California, these toxic, potentially blindness-inducing products are still sold as "Organics by Africa's Best." But don't feel too bad. Even though the company agreed to change their name in California (to the unapologetically unoriginal "Originals by Africa's Best"), we continue to find their phony "Organics" labeled products in stores in California.

We think it's time for responsible stores to drop these harmful products from store shelves altogether. Recently national drug store chain CVS took a bold step in announcing it will remove all tobacco products from its stores. A health care company shouldn't sell products that are known to be harmful to our health.

We agree with this reasoning – that's why we're asking CVS/Caremark CEO Larry J. Merlo to ban all "Organics by Africa's Best" products from their stores. No child or family should be hoodwinked by phony "organics" that pose serious health threats.
