The World Cup is the single most watched sporting event in the world. FIFA, the governing body of football (soccer), regulates the game, matches, players' conduct and international competitions, in addition to promoting the game throughout the world. In December 2010, FIFA awarded the 2018 World Cup to the Russian Federation, a recognition of the importance of football in Russia, and the country's potential for hosting an event on the global stage. President Vladimir Putin, obviously delighted with the decision and what this meant for the country and him personally, called it "a sign of trust." That trust has been betrayed. Beginning on February 27 this year, Russian troops began seizing control of installations in Crimea, Ukraine, and carried out a complete invasion of the peninsula over the following days, in violation of international law and Russia's own treaties with Ukraine. Such aggression has not been seen in the region since the second World War. Yugoslavia in 1992 was excluded from the Euopean Championships after qualifying first in their group, because of the ongoing conflict within its borders. Russia does not deserve to participate in, let alone host, the greatest sporting event in the world in 2018. Please join in standing against the rewarding of tyranny, and moving the 2018 World Cup to a more appropriate venue.

This petition shows that the world will not simply ignore what is going on today in Crimea, Ukraine. With enough support, FIFA will reconsider its choice of Russia as the 2018 host.
