Lynn Good, Duke Energy President

For years your company has known about the threat to our communities and our water from coal ash stored behind earthen dams at 14 locations across North Carolina. I am devastated to learn that the coal ash pond at your retired Dan River coal plant has spilled 80,000 tons of coal ash into the river. In recent published reports, your spokesperson agreed that storing coal ash in lagoons is outdated. What more evidence do you need before you move the wet coal ash out of these hazardous, unlined ponds and into safer, lined landfills? Coal is dirty at every step -- from mining, to burning, to the disposal of coal ash. Please move swiftly toward a clean energy future and protect our water and our communities from the perils of coal.

Signed,

Sierra Club

Duke Energy is the biggest energy company in America, with coal waste sites in six states -- including the one that spilled its toxic contents into the Dan River this February.

The EPA has rated ten of these coal ash sites, including the one on the Dan River, as being "high hazard." Duke has known about the problems with their coal ash ponds for years but done nothing to significantly clean them up.

Tell Duke Energy CEO Lynn Good that it is unacceptable to pollute our waters with coal ash. Clean up the mess in the Dan River immediately and clean up the rest of their toxic coal ash ponds to prevent another spill.
