Jeff Smisek, United Airlines CEO; Angela Foster-Rice, Managing Director of Global Environmental Affairs and Sustainability

We urge United Airlines to institute policies to reduce plastic waste on flights. Some airlines, like Alaska Airlines, have been requesting customers to keep their cups between refills so that each passenger only uses one per flight. We request that United Airlines start a similar policy and train their employees to reduce waste.

Signed,

How this will help

I'm sure that many of us who care about reducing plastic waste have thought about it while on airplanes.  As the flight attendant comes down the aisle to collect waste for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd time...

I'm sure that many of us who care about reducing plastic waste have thought about it while on airplanes.  As the flight attendant comes down the aisle to collect waste for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd time we wonder why people don't re-use their disposable cups.  Why don't attendants at least ask us to re-use our cups?

Do people really need new plastic cups every time they get a glass of water, cola or juice?  Why is it acceptable for airlines to waste so much plastic? Did you know that an astonishing 1 million plastic cups are wasted every six hours on airline flights within the United States? [1]  This number is staggering and scary.  As consumers we should demand that airlines change their policies?

Currently, United Airlines (headquartered in Chicago, Illinois) doesn't have a public policy for reducing waste and they are ranked near the middle of the "Greenest Airlines".  They are ranked 8th out of the 15 airlines tested. [2]  They talk about recycling waste and have finally phased out Styrofoam cups with recyclable plastic cups called "MicroGREEN" (doesn't sound that green), but  don't mention policies that would reduce waste. [3]   Currently, Alaska Airlines attendants have a policy requesting passengers to keep the cups between refills so that each passenger only uses one per flight.

Please sign the petition and put pressure on United Airlines to reduce their plastic waste by instituting a policy of requesting that customers re-use their cups.
