The Daiquiri Factory's decision to name one of its drinks "Date Grape Kool-aid" is outrageous and insensitive, sending a message to rape survivors everywhere that their experiences can be reduced to a mere punch line.
Date rape statistics are now higher than ever (especially in college towns like Spokane) and making light of these sexual crimes just perpetuates the culture of violence. We urge you to take "Date Grape Koolaid" off your menu and issue and apologize for your bar's tasteless sense of humor.
Stop Violence Against Women
The Daiquiri Factory, a new bar that opened last week in Downtown Spokane, Washington, is calling one of its signature cocktails "Date Grape Kool-Aid."
Despite hundred of protesters, angry comments online, and calls for boycotts, the bar is defending itself on its Facebook page, saying: "It's the name of a drink … Not meant to offend...there is a thing called fun."
Guess what? Rape is never fun.
"Date Grape Kool-aid" is more than just a bad joke, it suggests that getting drugged and sexually assaulted at a bar isn't a valid concern for women.
The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network estimates that every 2 minutes, an American is sexually assaulted, and that there is an average of 237,000 victims of rape or sexual assault each year. Clearly, this is a very real problem and joking about the issue just perpetuates the kind of attitudes that got us here.
So far, Jamie Pendleton — the owner of Spokane Downtown Daiquiri
Factory — has refused to apologize and has yet to respond to any media's request for comment. Instead, and continues to paint himself as a victim of online "haters."
Jamie, drop the offensive name and apologize to rape victims everywhere for your bar's gross insensitivity!
