We are demanding that you reconsider your application for expansion of the port at Abott Point in order to protect our World Heritage Reef. Your company needs to take responsibility and look at alternatives that are less destructive.

This needs to occur to avoid the effects that it will have on the ecosystem; killing and destroying hundreds and thousands of marine life, leaving us without a world heritage area. This greed would make our country look stupid for destroying our own heritage.

Coral reefs are one of the largest economy boosters giving Australia alone 5.86 billion giving us one of the highest paid economy boosters. This gives Australians thousands of jobs in industries such as fishing, agriculture and tourism.

Coral is one of the most important creatures in controlling how much carbon dioxide is in our ocean water. Without coral, the amount of carbon dioxide in the water would rise dramatically and that would affect all living things on Earth.

Coral reefs are very important because they protect coasts from strong currents and waves by slowing down the water before it gets to the shore. That is why they are called barrier reefs. They provide a barrier between the ocean and the shore.

We the undersigned demand that you find alternatives for the dumping of the 3 million cubic metres of seabed on the World Heritage Area (Great Barrier Reef).

Yours sincerely

Brock Hawthorn
