President Obama

Dear President Obama,

In your State on the Union address you took the bold and necessary step to commit to use your executive powers to raise the minimum wage of federal contractors to $10.10 an hour.

However, I was disturbed to hear that that federal contractors with disabilities would be excluded from this order. This is not right. You yourself said in the State of the Union " you cook our troops’ meals or wash their dishes, you shouldn’t have to live in poverty.” This should apply to everyone with or without disabilities.

Furthermore, we are asking that you publicly support reforming the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) that allows employers to pay disabled workers way below minimum wage, in some cases as low as 22¢.

If you are going to step up for America's workforce make sure you step up for all of them. Close the loophole in this act that exploits workers and pays them pennies.

Thank you

Signed,

Equal Rights for Disabled Workers

How this will help

While numbers are unclear there are an estimated 50,000 contractors with disabilities working for LESS THAN MINIMUM WAGE!

Furthermore, Obama should use this moment to reform the the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) that allows companies and non-profit organizations like Goodwill to pay disabled workers way below minimum wage, in some cases as low as 22¢.
