A candidate for Congress in Virginia named Richard Black thinks that spousal rape shouldn't be a crime.
During a speech he made while serving in the Virginia House of Delegates in 2002, Black questioned whether spousal rape is even possible:
"I do not know how on earth you could validly get a conviction of a husband-wife rape, when they're living together, sleeping in the same bed, she's in a nightie, and so forth, there's no injury, there's no separation or anything."
With these ridiculous comments, Black suggests that women are property who have signed away their right to say "no" to their husbands once they are married.
In reality, marital rape is a form of domestic violence and all too common in society. Though the most underreported form of rape, it is estimated that 10% -14% of married women in the U.S. are raped by their husbands at least once. These are crimes we can't allow to stay hidden behind closed doors.
We have to speak out against anyone who excuses rape, but it's especially important to call out candidates for public office, like Sen. Black, who could turn their views into dangerous, anti-woman policies one day.
Help us tell Black and others like him that no one - man, woman, or wife - deserves to be raped, and everyone has the right to live in a safe home.
Senator Black, pull out of the Congressional race and denounce your backwards views on marital rape !
