As a consumer, I look for the safest products for my family. But children's furniture and other children’s products often contain unlabeled, harmful flame retardant chemicals.
In January, a new flammability safety standard will give producers easier ways to make their furniture and children's products without these harmful chemicals. Fire safety experts say that the new standard improves fire safety, so there is no reason for any company to continue to sell toxic products with chemicals that do not protect us in fires, but do expose our children and families to health hazards. Retailers like Toys "R" Us will have enormous influence in urging suppliers to move quickly to provide safer flame retardant-free products.
Therefore, I urge you to take immediate action to alert your suppliers that you intend to stock only flame retardant-free children's furniture and other children's products beginning in January, and that you will clearly identify any older products in your stores that still contain flame retardant chemicals.
Let’s work together to make 2014 a Healthy New Year!

The new CEH report, Playing on Poisons, found that 90% of children's play furniture purchased from major retailers including Toys "R" Us contain harmful flame retardant chemicals. Fortunately, in January a new flammability standard will give companies easy ways to make safer products for our children, without toxic flame retardants.
It's time for Toys "R" Us and other retailers to offer safer products for our children! Urge Toys "R" Us CEO Antonio Urcelay to take immediate action to alert its suppliers that starting in January, we want safer, flame retardant-free products – and we want any older products that still contain flame retardants to be labeled. We have the right to know when products for our children contain harmful flame retardant chemicals!
