The U.S. Senate

As your constituent, I urge you to support S.815/H.R.1755, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. This crucial bill is dedicated to the principle that every worker should be judged solely on his or her merits. Hardworking Americans should not be kept from supporting their families and making a positive contribution to the economic life of our nation because of characteristic that have no bearing on their ability to do a job. Yet in remains legal in many states to fire or refuse to hire someone simply because of his or her sexual orientation or gender identity. ENDA would prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in most workplaces.

At the same time, ENDA acknowledges the freedoms of faith and conscience under the First Amendment. The legislation broadly exempts from its scope any religious organization, thereby ensuring that religious institutions will not be compelled to violate the religious precepts on which they are founded, whether or not we may agree with those precepts. In so doing, ENDA respects the protections for religious institutions afforded by the First Amendment and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 while ensuring that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are protected from baseless discrimination in the workplace.

Many Americans grapple with the difficulties of lost jobs every day, particularly in these difficult economic times. It is indefensible that, while sharing every American’s concerns about the health of our economy, LGBT workers must also fear job security because of prejudice. The time is long overdue to pass ENDA and end a longstanding injustice against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans.

The Senate is expected to vote this week on legislation that would halt discrimination against gay workers.  The landmark Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) is a crucial bill that would ensure hardworking Americans not be kept from supporting their families and making a positive contribution to the economic life of our nation because of characteristics that have no bearing on their ability to do a job.  Tell your senators and representatives to vote in favor of ENDA and end a longstanding injustice against gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans.
